The Pucara is an ancient pre-Inca fortress rebuilt, located 1km from the main square of Tilcara, crossing the river Huasamayo.

A real strength of the aboriginal engineering, just 1 kilometer from the town Tilcara, is undoubtedly the most important pre-Hispanic work of Argentina which preserves the magic of those times immemorial.

The natives of the region decided to set their homes on top of the hills and plateaus of difficult access, was the ideal place for fend off attacks; It dominated the junction of only two roads of place, on one hand with defend the cliffs above the Rio Grande, and on the other rough slopes. In the more accessible slopes they built high walls. The pucará not only had defensive purposes but also social and religious. From this height the surrounding crop fields and houses of farmers in the lowlands could be controlled.
